MIDROC Unveils 5-Hotel Expansion Plan Ahead of Ethiopia’s COP32 Hosting
Addis Ababa — MIDROC Investment Group has unveiled a sweeping expansion of its hospitality portfolio, announcing plans to build and acquire multiple internationally branded hotels in Addis Ababa and regional cities, as Ethiopia prepares to host the 32nd United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32) in 2027.
The expansion comes amid heightened international attention following the announcement that Dr. Gedion Timothewos has been named to a key leadership role related to COP32 preparations, reinforcing Ethiopia’s diplomatic and logistical readiness to host one of the world’s largest multilateral summits.
Major Expansion Within Sheraton Addis Compound
A centerpiece of MIDROC’s strategy is the development of an additional Sheraton-branded hotel within the existing Sheraton Addis compound, significantly expanding capacity inside one of Africa’s most iconic hospitality landmarks.
The new expansion hotel is expected to enhance Addis Ababa’s ability to host high-level delegations, heads of state, and international organizations during COP32 and other global events.
1,500 Beds for COP32 Delegates
MIDROC Investment Group CEO Jamal Ahmed stated that the group is mobilizing resources to secure approximately 1,500 hotel beds for COP32 participants through a combination of new developments, upgrades, and acquisitions.
Key projects include:
- Moxy by Marriott and Four Points by Sheraton hotels in Mohammadi Residential Village
- The Wabi Shebele Hotel, being integrated into the Autograph Collection by Marriott
- Continued construction and completion works at The Westin Addis Ababa, located on African Union premises
- Additional Four Points by Sheraton properties planned in Jimma and other regional cities
The strategy reflects a coordinated effort to align international hotel brands with Ethiopia’s conference, diplomatic, and business tourism needs.
Resorts and Eco-Tourism Expansion
Beyond urban hotels, MIDROC is expanding into resort and eco-tourism destinations, signaling a broader diversification of its hospitality portfolio.
The Group has recently acquired Langano Savannah Resort, with plans to reposition it under international Marriott resort brands. In parallel, Denbi Eco Lodge was inaugurated last week, highlighting MIDROC’s growing investment in sustainable and eco-friendly tourism infrastructure.
Positioning Ethiopia for Global Events
Ethiopia’s selection to host COP32 in 2027 places Addis Ababa at the center of global climate diplomacy, with tens of thousands of delegates expected to attend. The scale of the event requires substantial upgrades in accommodation, transport, and services, creating significant opportunities for private-sector investment.
