Morocco’s Holdings of US Treasury Securities Rise to $4.9 Billion

Morocco’s holdings of US Treasury securities rose to $4.906 billion (MAD 45.6 billion) in August 2026, up from $4.777 billion (MAD 44.4 billion) in July, according to data from the US Department of the Treasury.

The increase amounted to $129 million (MAD 1.2 billion), or around 2.7% in one month.

The figures show a continued rise since April, when holdings stood at $3.846 billion (MAD 35.8 billion). They increased to $4.181 billion (MAD 38.9 billion) in May and $4.603 billion (MAD 42.8 billion) in June before reaching $4.777 billion (MAD 44.4 billion) in July.

Compared with August 2025, holdings were approximately 30% higher, according to reported figures.

The data come from the US Treasury’s Treasury International Capital (TIC) system, which tracks foreign holdings of US securities. The figures cover Treasury debt of different maturities and include holdings attributed to both public and private investors residing in Morocco. They do not represent Moroccan government holdings alone.

US Treasury securities are debt instruments issued by the US government to  finance its borrowing needs. They include short-term Treasury bills and longer-term Treasury notes and bonds. Investors often use them as relatively liquid assets, while governments and  financial institutions may hold them as part of their investment portfolios.

The increase in Morocco-attributed holdings came as foreign investors increased their net purchases of long-term US securities by $300.7 billion (around MAD 2.8 trillion) in August, including $257.8 billion (MAD 2.4 trillion) from private foreign investors and $42.9 billion (MAD 399 billion) from foreign official institutions, according to the US Treasury.

The Treasury says its country-level data rely largely on information from US-based custodians and broker-dealers. As a result, the reported country may not always reflect the ultimate owner of a security, particularly when assets are held through intermediaries in other countries.

The next Treasury International Capital data release, covering September 2026, is scheduled for November 18.
