National Treasury's Edgar Sishi to Join IMF

South Africa's National Treasury has announced that Deputy Director General (DDG) Budget Office, Edgar Sishi, will leave his post at the end of March 2026 to join the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"Edgar has built a strong team at the Budget Office, and I have full confidence in their ability to maintain the very high standards set under his stewardship," said Director General of the National Treasury, Dr Duncan Pieterse.

Pieterse thanked Sishi for his dedicated service, saying, "The National Treasury thanks Edgar for his dedicated service to the department and to South Africa, and congratulates him on his new post."

Sishi has played a crucial role in navigating South Africa's public finances through the COVID-19 pandemic and has helped achieve a turning point in the country's public finances, with debt stabilising for the first time since the 2008 global financial crisis.

The National Treasury will begin recruiting a new permanent DDG Budget Office soon. In a meantime, all three Chief Directors within budget office will act as acting DDG in rotation starting with Mr Marumo Maake.
